About Us

INTERNS

           WISING UP PRESS INTERNSHIPS: 2012

We are looking for a few highly qualified interns to work with us in the coming year. We will be reading applications and interviewing on an ongoing basis. We are interested in people who can work 6-8 hours a week, for a minimum commitment of two months. We are located in the greater Atlanta area and prefer interns who live within commuting distance.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone seriously interested in learning all stages of book development and production and how a small press with a strong social mission develops.  Because we try to match our interns' skills and interests with our current projects and make a strong mentoring commitment to them, we expect an equally intentional commitment on their part.

Interns will help with all press activities, including administrative work, proof reading, copy editing, book setting, e-book translation, website maintenance, video and sound editing, social media, book readings and community building. We are more than a literary press, so applicants should be familiar with, and interested in, the subject matter of our publications and our more communitarian approach to publishing.

Applicants must have excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, a keen attention to detail and deadlines, and the ability to work unsupervised. Social skills are also essential. Proficiency with Word is necessary. Familiarity with Adobe In-Design and e-publishing programs are desirable, a willingness to learn them necessary. Familiarity with social media is also desirable as is some knowledge of sound and/or video editing programs. We prefer applicants to have  B.A. or beyond, but will consider college seniors.

If you feel you meet the requirements, please send us a resume, writing samples, and also a written statement that makes it clear that you've looked carefully at our website and have a feel for what makes us distinctive as a press, what dimensions of our activities speak most to you and why, and what skills you have at present and the ones you would like to develop.

MATTHEW BISHOP
Wising Up Press Intern
Emeritus

I am originally from Alma, Georgia. I graduated from Georgia Southern University (GSU) with a Bachelor's in English Literature, and am currently studying at Hollins for an MFA in poetry. I worked at Wising Up Press as an intern for a year between college and graduate school. I was a finalist in the Clapboard House fiction contest judged by Dorothy Alison, and winner of GSU's Roy F. Powell award in poetry. I especially enjoy contemporary poetry and the Beat poets. My favorite authors are Lyn Hejinian, C.K. Williams, Allen Ginsberg, and Andrew Hudgins. I love music, and can play guitar and piano. The word "medicine" makes me think of peppermint. And I refuse to kill anything alive, not even spiders, of which I am afraid.
